I was born in Denver, Colorado, but spent most of my youth in New York, on Long Island. I left New York in 1976, as the drummer in a pop-rock quartet. That band arrived in Sacramento, California, in 1978, and I’m still here.

With Salvatore and Norma Galioto.

My first release, 13 Songs, was recorded at Moon Studio, in Sacramento, and co-produced by Moon Studio’s David Houston. [Release date: March 31, 2021]

I began writing songs when I was eighteen. For years I continued those endeavors, often with great dedication. Then at some point I said to myself, “Yes, I am a singer/songwriter!” I started performing my own songs at open mics, cafes, art galleries, small clubs, big clubs, and festivals, all the while still playing drums in local bands. Then, in the summer of 2017, I decided to become a recording artist. With the ever prevalent guidance of co-producer David Houston, I set about transforming thirteen original songs into thirteen recordings. With little fanfare, and even less surprise, the result was, 13 Songs.

Salvatore Galioto (1925 - 2009)

Recorded in 1991, in a hotel room, in Reno, Nevada.

Before it became 13 Songs, the working title of my recording was Genericana, with which I felt certain was the real-deal description of my songs. It was meant to signify this ain’t no Rite Of Spring, and there won’t be any riots at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. No, nothing new here, just 13 Songs stylistically derived from popular generic forms of American music, those being folk, country, pop, rock, blues, and jazz. As it turns out, I just couldn’t let go of this title, and its last remaining vestige appears on the back cover, in the upper left corner, File Under: Genericana.

Tony: “I’m calling it Genericana. What do you think?”

Most musicians: “I wish I thought of that!”

Others: “What? You mean your music is for geriatrics?”

Still others: “You think it’s a good idea to call your music generic?”

Yet another working title was One Voice, Six Strings.
